Maybe it’s time we did away with “doctor” and started using “physician” when addressing MDs and DOs, except for when we refer to individual physicians, then we use “Doctor (last name)” because it’s respectful. I agree. I have begun stating “I want to be a physician” as it is a more apt term and helps me feel better about not being lumped together with other ‘providers’ FNP Nurse Funny Halloween Ghost T-Shirt I remember when I learned the word physician in like third grade and started using it instead of doctor. I felt so fancy at the time. I do this too. My friend is in residency right now and when she was reviewing my secondaries she actually suggested I switch instances of “doctor” to “physician” and I’ve been trying to remember to do that ever since. I try to say the physician/surgeon when I talk to the patients I see when I tell them the plan or want my SP to go see them

Sorry, I was addressing this. We already have specific terms for most doctoral degree holders. Doctor of Physical Therapy: physical therapist. Doctor of Pharmacy: pharmacist. NPs, whether they have an MNP or DNP are still nurse practitioners. FNP Nurse Funny Halloween Ghost T-Shirt That’s why another umbrella term for NPs and PAs that differentiate them from physicians are “non-physician provide This made me think of PhDs. Since we call them “dr.” As well. Maybe Dr. (last name) should be accompanied by the credential ie. She would be Dr. Harris, DNP when placed in the written world. Just a thought? We never call PhDs “Dr.” outside of academia or in the context of an official “subject matter expert/interview” setting, and no PhD will refer to themselves as a Doctor outside of those settings either. With NPs, the strict assumption is related to the medical context, in which “Doctor” exclusively refers to physicians.

What are you talking about. Phd’s are referred to as “Dr. So-and-so” all the time outside of a professional context. That’s a title you earn for an incredible achievement. How full of yourself do you have to be to think that people should forego a title they worked their ass off for, because they have the same title as you and you feel like it diminishes your achievement. Stop looking down on other people FNP Nurse Funny Halloween Ghost T-Shirtand Jesus Christ get off your high horse. In the same vein, physicians almost never refer to themselves as “Doctor” outside of a medical context. The point wasn’t to diminish the accomplishments of PhDs, it was that people referring to themselves as “Doctor” outside of their standard context leads to confusion. ie. A Doctoral Nurse Practitioner calling themselves Doctor.
