I hope it works.. but in my experience, people like this don’t want to learn much. Take a look at GRAMPS, RootsMagic or Ancestry. It’ll be way more rewarding for you. You can still use FamilySearch as a source if you want.. but the tree will be yours and safer from troll like these. Ancestry is a pay service tho so if you stop paying you can’t see the citation images anymore so.. don’t hesitate to save them locally or use RootsMagic to import them. This allows me to have complete control over my data and also benefit from the matching algorithms in Ancestry and FindMyPast. Family Genealogist I Know Which Branch The Nuts Came From T-Shirt Legacy is tightly integrated with FamilySearch (from LDS) which makes researching that resource very efficient.

Same, only I use GRAMPs for my local copy. GRAMPs has a lot of features neither Ancestry nor FS really offer, like data processing to identify invalid dates and place names, analytics to see who in your tree lived the longest, had the most kids, etc. It’s also extremely useful to fork a tree in the instance that say a cousin wants their tree, so you can give them the side of your tree that you two share. There are some other 3rd party apps for FS which are incredibly handy, I really like Puzzilla for instance, for identifying hints, potential research targets, Family Genealogist I Know Which Branch The Nuts Came From T-Shirt duplicates, etc. I use Ancestry but I attach images of the sources in the photo gallery (and also have them all saved to my computer). It’s a bit cumbersome but it means that using the tree for free is easy.

I agree, sometimes when I get a photo hint and get excited and it’s just a record that I already have, it’s a little disappointing. But like you said, I understand why people do it. It doesn’t make me mad or anything. I sometimes save the record image to my computer when I do have an active subscription, but I only upload images of photos or newspaper articles or things that wouldn’t be found in ancestry records. Then when I deactivate my ancestry membership for a few months, or however long, Family Genealogist I Know Which Branch The Nuts Came From T-Shirt I still have the records that are important to me and I can just do my research elsewhere and add to ancestry as I go. I think even though we all have our little differences in how we do things, most of us are just trying to do our best. I’m lucky that the majority of people I’ve met through genealogy are helpful and courteous. Sometimes disinterested, but I don’t think I’ve come across anyone like the guy in this post.
