Sounds like a pretty fun life for the right dog! Are you aware that most hotels have rules against the dog being in the hotel room unattended, though? Something you’ll definitely need to think through. A lot of the toy companion breeds could fit the bill here, and I don’t think being alone for 8 hours a day will be problematic for the right dog. It doesn’t sound like you have the flexibility to raise a puppy. Am I wrong there? If you’re okay with an adult dog, then purchasing one from a breeder or foster-based rescue would be an excellent move, Every Once In A While A Dog Enters Your Life Dachshund T-Shirt because you’d already have a good idea of their temperament and if they have any separation anxiety tendencies. CKCS, Havanese, Lhasa Apso, Bichon, and Coton all come to mind as chill companion breeds small enough to fly that meet your requirements! Bichon , Havanese and Cotons are breeds generally prone to separation anxiety. Every Once In A While A Dog Enters Your Life Dachshund T-Shirt Not to say it couldn’t work out (and the bichon breeds are wonderful – I have two bichons frises currently, they’re amazing dogs) but they probably wouldn’t be my first choice in this situation. I honestly can’t name a single breed this website hasn’t claimed is prone to separation anxiety. If purchasing from a reputable breeder, that would be the absolute first question I would ask them if I was OP, given their planned lifestyle. It’s also why I recommended an adult dog with a known temperament in a home (breeder or foster) that would have already shown signs of this if it was going to be a problem.

That doesn’t surprise me. I’m sure there are anecdotal cases of separation anxiety for every breed out there. But the bichon breeds are notorious for it, with the exception of Maltese (though I’ve seen many anecdotal cases of it in that breed as well). The Bichon Club of America even notes the tendency on their website. There are always outliers, obviously. It would not be impossible to find a bichon that tolerated being alone in hotel rooms (though, from what I’ve seen with bichon rescues, Every Once In A While A Dog Enters Your Life Dachshund T-Shirt would likely be reluctant to adopt out to this kind of situation, regardless of the personality of the dog). A retired show dog who is used to traveling and staying in unfamiliar locations could be an option. But overall it’s going to be much easier for OP to find a compatible dog if he looks at breeds which aren’t so inherently attached to their people.
