OP is spot-on about being comfortable in the area you’re driving in, that contributed to me failing at Kapolei the first time but passing at Dillingham Aloha Hawaii Hawaiian Island shirt the next try. I spend 99% of my time in town so I know the roads around Dillingham. Being unfamiliar with Kapolei made me forget minor stuff like mistiming a left turn, not parallel parking close enough to the curb, and not counting 3 seconds after stopping behind a stop line. I focused too much on trying to navigate. Simular for me. I spend years driving in rush hour traffic. I went to Koolau and failed twice. The first time wasn’t confident. Practiced the route and drove around just to get familiar with the area. The second time the tester claimed they did not believe I was ready. Found out later that was the tester many had issues with not following guidelines. I went to William and passed a morning exam.

It’s been years since I took mine, but here are the couple things I remember that I got dinged on: Head check when making a right turn. You still gotta watch for bikes and other stuff coming up on your right side before you make the turn. When making a right turn, turn into the far right lane, then change lanes, and vice-versa. I made a right turn directly Aloha Hawaii Hawaiian Island shirt the left lane and got dinged. I took mine at Wahiawa because I also heard it was easier there. The roads and lanes there are simpler, and there’s not as much traffic. I took my road test many, many years ago as soon as I was of age to get a license. I lucked out because the cop giving the test was a cousin of mine. So we drove to a drive-in, had burgers and drinks and I ‘passed’ the road test. Not checking your blind spot is how I got dinged as well, so I always check for bikers when I do my head check when I’m driving normally in town because I’m still salty about missing that one. I also missed a speed limit sign, but the two dings weren’t enough to disqualify me. Passed with a 93. Good enough!

My test examiner took away points for it. I don’t remember exactly why, but I told her I inched forward because I couldn’t see both sides clearly. I probably came forward too much. She said in some cases that isn’t always safe to do because someone can come in and hit you from the side if they’re speeding and you’re too slow in noticing. I would ask the examiner on Aloha Hawaii Hawaiian Island shirt they think on that before testing. All I know is that it is okay to at least check with exaggerated head checks. Don’t go too far like I possibly did. I don’t know any rules against it. Or at least I have yet to look into it at the moment. But maybe if you’re doing trips to the grocery store (anything essential) maybe opt to drive with whoever is going that is licensed to drive. The Koolau guys are pretty nice. The possible locations they can take you on is a pretty obvious loop my only real advice is to do at least one loop where you come out the other exit of the shopping center.
